The Series
Circle North is a drama series revolving around the lives and experiences of 5 close friends living in a fictional town in England.
Ben, Summer, Grace, Kian, and Millie are learning to navigate life as they grow up by drawing upon the stories of people they know or have directly experienced themselves.
Coming from different backgrounds and with a willingness to challenge each other, in each episode the friends share a story that explores a key issue affecting secondary school aged young people such as child criminal exploitation, sexual harassment, relationship abuse and radicalisation brought to life through a supporting cast of over 30 characters.
Characters
Episode 1 – Controlled
Jess is mistreated by Max. Although their relationship starts well, he becomes possessive and controlling; leading to threats to harm himself and using physical abuse against her.
Episode 2 – Message Received
Anna’s trust was broken by Taylor. Taylor could not trust Ronnie to keep Anna’s images to himself and soon everyone had seen what she believed would be kept private. What was seen by some as a joke went onto become a very serious situation for everyone, involving the police, punishment, and harm to Anna’s mental health.
Episode 3 – Exploited
Ethan is groomed by someone posing as a friend. The friend, Connor, finds out Ethan’s vulnerabilities, such as falling out with his friends and his dad leaving. Ethan wanted to be part of something new and exciting such as going out for a drive, have new older friends, and being given drugs to try.
Episode 4 – Joint Enterprise
Ben’s friends are worried when they hear his new mates have been seen out carrying knives. He’s defensive and it seems he might be hiding something.
Grace shares how Ben isn’t all that different to Jamie; a boy who she knew who felt he had to carry a weapon for his protection.
Episode 5 – Radicalised
At first, Harrison didn’t think too much about why his new gaming friends were asking about his “Britishness”. As their relationship grew, they encouraged him to look into some more extreme views about a perceived national threat.
As his views become more extreme his friends have the courage to challenge his views before they risk losing him forever.
Epsiode 6 – Unwanted
Worried that a gathering of his close friends round is lacking excitement, Ben doesn’t put up much resistance when a group he sort of knows show up expecting a house party.
As things liven up, some of the newcomers act in harassing and sexually assaulting ways. Faced with a series of uncomfortable situations, the friends band together to stand up against this behaviour and help the partygoers understand how many of the things happening are not acceptable.
Epsiode 7 – Kindness
In the episode ‘Kindness’ Phoebe is isolated and bullied at school. Whilst out for food with her mum, she is made fun of by Poppy and Freddie who are challenged by their older cousin, Millie.
Millie reflects on her own experience with the hurtfulness of bullying. She explains how Ben standing up for her made a world of difference and challenges Poppy and Freddie to bring the positive kindness that Phoebe needs in her life – for both their good and hers.
